How to Identify Your Transmission
If you've ever asked yourself how do I know what transmission I have, you're not alone. Knowing your vehicle's transmission can help when ordering replacement parts, scheduling maintenance, or researching towing capabilities and performance upgrades. Whether you drive a Chevrolet car, SUV, or truck, there are several easy ways to identify your transmission. At Gillman Chevrolet, we're here to help you understand your vehicle and keep it performing at its best.
Check Your Owner's Manual
One of the quickest ways to identify your transmission is by checking your owner's manual. Most manuals list the transmission type within the specifications section, along with information about recommended transmission fluid, maintenance intervals, and operating features. If you've misplaced your owner's manual, many manufacturers make digital copies available online, or your dealership can help you locate the correct information.
Decode Your VIN
Your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) can reveal a wealth of information about your vehicle, including the transmission it was originally equipped with. Chevrolet dealerships can use your VIN to access factory build information and confirm the exact transmission installed at the factory.
You can usually find your VIN in one of three places:
- At the base of the windshield on the driver's side.
- On the driver's door jamb.
- On your vehicle registration or insurance card.
Look for the RPO Code Sticker
Many Chevrolet vehicles include a sticker listing Regular Production Option (RPO) codes. These factory option codes identify the major components installed on your vehicle, including the transmission.
Depending on the model year, you may find the RPO label:
- Inside the glove box.
- On the driver's door jamb.
- Inside the center console.
- In the rear cargo area under the load floor.
Once you've located the RPO code, a Chevrolet dealership can match it to the transmission installed in your vehicle.
Contact Your Chevrolet Service Center
If you're still unsure which transmission your vehicle has, the easiest solution is to contact your Chevrolet service center. A technician can identify your transmission using your VIN and answer questions about maintenance schedules, transmission fluid specifications, towing recommendations, and repair history.
